Lexi’s Had Enough – Preview

Cassie was awake early on what was shaping up to be a hot and humid Friday morning. Her class wasn’t until 11 AM, so she’d slept in until it was almost nine AM for a change. She drank her homemade iced coffee as she stood near the front window. Her view was the street and a few houses that sat near her apartment complex, but it would have to do. She sighed as she scanned the New York City horizon.

I do NOT want to walk to class in this gross weather, she thought with a scowl. It’s so fucking hot today.

Sighing again, Cassie finished what was left of her coffee. She was about to walk away from the window when she saw someone leaving the apartment complex. Cassie realized that it was a woman— a woman she’d had several run-ins with in the past.

What the fuck is Lexi doing here? Wait…Isaac lives in another unit here, Cassie thought. She must’ve stayed over at his place last night. God, what a bitch. How dare she! And of course, she’d flaunt it for me to hopefully catch.

She set down her glass and watched Lexi stop walking so that she could organize her purse. Cassie took the opportunity to hustle down from her apartment to catch up with her sworn enemy.

“What are you doing here?”

Lexi jumped and whipped her head towards a smirking Cassie. The latter had her hands on her hips to make it clear that she wasn’t messing around.

“Oh, hi there, Cassie,” Lexi said. “Did you need something?”

Cassie completely ignored the question. “Did you stay over at Isaac’s last night?”

“Yeah, I did,” Lexi answered. A smirk crept onto her face, causing Cassie to loudly scoff.

“You’re such a fucking whore, you know that? You’re a FUCKING WHORE!”

“Uh…okay?”

Cassie rolled her eyes before looking Lexi up and down. “You even look like a slut! Do you have any shame?”

“Nope,” Lexi answered with a shrug. “Now, if you’ll please excuse me, I’m going home. See ya.”

She proceeded to saunter off, presumably to her apartment complex. If Cassie’s words had hurt her, Lexi had done her best to act as unaffected as possible. It was a stark contrast to how she’d handled Cassie’s harassment in the past.

Cassie was still scowling as she walked back up to her unit. She couldn’t understand Lexi’s nonchalant attitude to what she’d said. How could Lexi appear so unbothered to what she had just told her?

Cassie was busy trying to process it all when she finally made it back. She saw Mariana standing in the kitchen with a puzzled look on her face.

“Where the hell were you?”

“I saw Lexi leaving our complex, so I asked her if she had stayed over at Isaac’s place last night,” Cassie explained. “She admitted it without any hesitation or shame. I called her a whore for that, and then called her a slut for dressing like…well, a slut.”

Mariana raised her eyebrows. “Wow.”

Here’s the weirdest part— she didn’t seem to care,” Cassie added. “She even had the fucking nerve to smirk at me! When I asked her if she had any shame, she said ‘No’ so casually. Then she was like, ‘If you’ll excuse me, I gotta go now.’ Something like that. She looked so unfazed.”

“I’m not surprised, to be honest.”

“What? Why?”

“Lexi’s probably gotten so used to you harassing and bullying her that she probably doesn’t care anymore,” Mariana surmised.

“I think she was only acting like she didn’t care,” Cassie countered.

Mariana mused this for a moment. “I don’t know. But I’m convinced that Lexi just doesn’t care about your antics anymore.”

“I guess,” Cassie remarked lamely. “Ugh, I gotta get ready for class. I’ll see you later, okay?”

“Sounds good,” Mariana replied.

Cassie disappeared into her room to change and get ready for her classes.

I don’t care if Lexi is bothered by me or not, she thought as she did her wavy dark brown hair. I’m gonna make sure her third year at NYU is hell, no matter what.
